Therapy or Coaching?
Therapy and coaching both help people grow- they just do different work. Neither is “better” than the other, rather they function as different tools for different jobs. Here are some ways to think about these two different tools, so that you can land with what serves you best:
Therapy
Often explores the past to heal and understand
Treats mental health conditions and emotional distress
Work typically guided by a treatment plan
Provided by a licensed clinician, often covered by insurance
The right place to start if you’re in crisis and/or struggling
Coaching
Starts where you are now, focusing on where you want to go
Support for decisions, transitions, and/or stuck points
You set the agenda, and we collaborate as equals
Not a clinical service and not billed to insurance
Works best when you want to focus on forward movement
A final, honest note: coaching isn’t a replacement for therapy. If what you’re carrying is a true mental health concern, therapy is the better fit- and finding the right support for you is my top priority. Therapy and coaching can also work beautifully alongside each other!
If you’re not sure which direction to go, that’s a great question to bring to a free Discovery Call- if coaching in general and me specifically seem like a good fit, we’ll get to work. If not, I will point you in the right direction.
